In 1990 Ivette Melendez was released from Riker’s Island prison after serving time for drug-related charges. Soon thereafter she wanted to make a change in her life. That’s when she was introduced to Exponents and meditation. Ivette Melendez has been working in the field of HIV/AIDS Substance Abuse for the last 14 years.  She graduated the A.R.R.I.V.E. Training Program at Exponents in 1994, and in 1996 accepted a full time position as a trainer for that same program. Ms. Melendez has been on the Advisory Planning Group for Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center.  She is currently a member of the Latino CASAC, the HIV Bronx Care Network and the Path Center at Brooklyn Hospital. She is also a key member and participant of the Bruised Reed Ministry (Strengthening and Empowering the Weary and Hopeless). Ivette Melendez has training as an HIV Pre and Post Counselor, Acupuncture Detoxification Specialist, Outreach Specialist, Community Affair and Liaison, and she is presently attending CASAC classes. Ms. Melendez specializes in working with: Substance Users, IVDU, Incarcerated/Ex-Offenders, HIV/AIDS patients, and homeless individuals and their families.  Currently Ivette Melendez is the Director of Client Outreach at Exponents. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Cum Laude), majoring in Sociology with the City University of New York, Lehman College, and a Master in Social Work from the City University of New York, Hunter College; School of Social Work and has recently become a United States Chaplain.  Ms. Melendez’s future goal is to open a halfway house for women coming out of prison. www.exponents.org
